The Cheapest Growth Lever: Agreeing on What a Qualified Lead Is

5 min readSamuel Susheel Nyalakanti

Marketing and sales often report different numbers for the same month. Closing that gap costs nothing and changes everything.

Ask a marketing team and a sales team how many leads came in last month, and you will often get two different answers. The gap between them is where budget quietly goes to waste.

Write the definition down

A qualified lead should be defined in a sentence both teams can repeat without hedging: who they are, what they asked for, and what makes them reachable. Once written, it becomes the conversion event you optimize toward.

  • Define qualification criteria jointly, then document them.
  • Send the qualified outcome back into the ad platforms as the primary conversion.
  • Review disqualified leads monthly — they are the clearest targeting feedback you will get.
  • Report one number, from one source, in one place.

Why this outperforms most optimizations

Bidding systems optimize toward the signal you give them. Feed them unqualified form fills and they will get very efficient at producing more of exactly that. Feed them qualified outcomes and the same budget starts working on the right problem.
